The orchard has 760 producing trees and 280 new ones which will start producing in the '24/'25 Summer. They are all under nets.
Some of our trees only fruit every second year, but they produce the most valuable fruit. Currently, that means that in a quiet year, you can expect to net more than the average wage and double that every second year. Two seasons ago, the lychees made a net profit of $198,000. The latest year was not so good but that was the case all over the state. Lychee Growers Association President, Derek Foley is quoted "reduction in yields across the state (in most cases 60%)". That is farming so you get the odd poor year. Rainfall this year has been very good so we expect a return to good yields. We have excellent irrigation, but rainfall is still important. In our case, things will get even better as the new trees mature.
We estimate that managing the property involves 2 months of serious work (around picking and pruning time), 5 months of easy work (flowering and fruiting ), and 5 months of not much work at all in Autumn and Winter. It could easily be run by somebody working from home if they took their holidays at picking time or hired a manager for that job.
Future returns can be hard to predict with agriculture in general but the current exponential increase in American demand for Australian lychees seems certain to keep pressure on domestic prices for quite some time. Having said that future returns can be hard to predict, I am now obliged to confess that this year will be very disappointing. The average rainfall here is 1.25 metres (50 inches) but this year there have only been 22 inches. Even with irrigation, our yield will be affected. On that basis and on the basis that I am 78 and my wife is 76, we have significantly dropped the price. It seems to me that nobody wants to work anymore, but if anyone out there does, this place would be very good value.
Videos of the farm can be seen by searching Goomboorian Lychees on Facebook.
The property has had three frosts in the last 14 years and is totally flood-free.
